Night Train

Jimmy Forrest took a part of this Duke Ellington piece and turned it into the #1 R&B hit “Night Train.”

“Happy Go Lucky Local” was part of the Deep South Suite that Duke wrote about 1946. Jimmy Forrest was on the band for a short time after that, and he found it convenient to “borrow” the main theme FROM Duke. Duke was irked, but as he so often did, moved on to new things.
