Remembering (Papa) Jo Jones

I had a tape (mixtape?) recorded for me when I was 13 or 14yo, and I lost it… Don’t remember which album it came from…

Jo Jones is one of the greatest drummers in the history of Jazz. Most inventive, he frequently improvises the most unpredictable and bold breaks with an impressive rythmic energy. This example of his drum solo shows his amazing and unique variety.

Remembering Papa Jo Jones (not to be confused with Philly Joe Jones), born on this day in 1911 in Chicago.

A band leader and pioneer in jazz percussion, Jones anchored the Count Basie Orchestra rhythm section from 1934 to 1948.

Here he is performing a drum solo in 1957.
